Word of the Day:

orison: \AWR-uh-zuhn\, noun
A prayer.

Science is Everywhere:

The longest living cells within our bodies are brain cells, which can live an entire lifetime.

My Teaching Philosophy:

I believe that today's children are our future, and in order to help them make the transition from merely “students”, to active everyday learners, we must provide them with the tools to help them want to learn.  By doing this, I plan to inform students of the most current information and facts I have, in an active, and variable manner per lesson, and help each child to cross their own learning bridge.  I believe progressivism is my most comparable philosophy, however the nature of a progressivist’s theory, is the flexibility to adjust teaching styles, and possibly encompass essentialist and reconstructionist practices to create the most effective lessons for one’s students.

I think variability and spontaneity are two very important aspects which should be present in every school day.  Without this, the attention span of adolescents will drift, and thus losing valuable time to help them want to learn.  Although sometimes students may feel that learning a particular subject or lesson topic may be irrelevant, the big picture of creating a well-rounded student and citizen are crucial in everyone's well being.

About the teacher:

My name is Maria Pohl.  I have recently graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor's in Science of Education.  I am certified to teach 6-12th grade English, Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Physics.  I hope to pursue a Master's Degree in Meteorology within a few years.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, playing organized sports such as volleyball and tennis.  I have participated in WAM (Make a Wish Foundation's Wish a Mile fundraiser) this past summer, and plan to ride to grand wishes again this year.
